How to Balance School and Work

These days, it is not uncommon for those going to school to also have a part-time or full-time job. A college education is expensive, and many people do not have the money saved up to pay for it. So, what do you do? The answer: Balance school and work. For those students who are trying to find the right balance between the two, here are some tips which may help so you can earn a degree as well as a living.

1. Be Organized

It can be nearly impossible for someone to keep everything straight if there is not a detailed and organized way to do it. Find the method that is right for you. Write everything down in a planner, keep files and schoolwork together in an organized manner which will help you to remember where everything is place, put reminders in your phone for the tests, deadlines, and work schedule. Place a calendar in your room or somewhere you will see it every day. Put important dates on there so you can visually see everything that needs to be done each month. Remember to also take the time you need to study as well. Keep your school materials together and in a place you won’t forget where they are. When juggling multiple tasks, it may be best to have detailed filing systems for everything.

2. Manage Stress

Sometimes, it may become overwhelming with all of the things you have on your plate. Stress may be an inevitable part of trying to balance school and work. You may want to find the best ways for you to alleviate stress when things seem to be getting to be too much to handle. One way to manage stress is to focus on one thing at a time instead of trying to do everything at once. By making giving yourself one target goal at a time, it makes it seem less scary and thus easier to accomplish. Another way to help with stress is to eat right and exercise daily. Although your day may be hectic, you should try to make time to make a healthy meal, do yoga, go for a run, or however you like to exercise. You may also find it helpful to just take a break for a while, relax your mind, and maybe see friends and family who you know will put you in a better mood.

3. Talk with Your Professors and Employers

Your professors may not understand your work schedule and your employer may not realize how much schoolwork you have. By communicating with these people and explaining to them what is going on in your life, it may help them to achieve an understanding of your hectic schedule. There may be a chance that more flexible scheduling options are available to you if you communicate effectively with all parties involved.

4. Don’t Try to Do Everything by Yourself

One very helpful way to balance school and work is to develop some sort of support system. This may include family members, friends, mentors, and classmates. Family members are there to support you and help you realize that your hard work and dedication is worth it. Your friends may be able to allow you to have fun when you need a break. Mentors may be able guide and counsel you towards your end goals. Classmates may be able to help you study as well as understand what you’re going through because they may be going through the same thing. By having a support system, it allows you to talk about things that shouldn’t be pent up inside, as well as help alleviate the stresses both school and work can bring on.

5. Know it is All Worth It

By earning a degree, you are giving yourself more of an opportunity than you may have had without it. You may be able to go after a career you find meaningful and that can support you and your family. By working while
